The UCSF MS and Neuroinflammation Center is an internationally-known specialty center for care of patients with all types of inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system. In addition to MS, we provide expert care for patients with neuromyelitis optica, transverse myelitis, optic neuritis, neurosarcoidosis, chronic meningitis, encephalitis and neurological manifestations of systemic inflammatory or rheumatological diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, connective tissue disease, Behcet’s Disease and vasculitis.
Encephalitis refers to inflammation of the brain, and meningitis refers to inflammation of the coverings around the brain and spinal cord. Inflammation of these tissues can be caused by a wide variety of infections, autoimmune diseases (immune system attacking the nervous system) or other causes. Our neurologists specialize in evaluating and treating patients with these mostly infectious and autoimmune conditions. We are leading international efforts to help diagnose patients and figure out what causes these conditions to develop as well as how they can be managed. To schedule an appointment or refer a patient to our Center, please visit those sections of our website. In addition to the care provided for neurologic infections at the Center, there is also a Neuro-Infectious Diseases Clinic at the UCSF Parnassus campus. The UCSF MS and Neuroinflammation Center also has active, cutting-edge research programs focused on encephalitis and meningitis with the goal of improving diagnosis and care.
